WHAT WE DO
Interfaith Social Justice started in Fall 2002 to build community based on socially engaged spirituality. Convinced that faith and activism are deeply interconnected, we have been part of the following social justice projects:
- Potlucks: We have gathered many times to share community, stories and food at the Interfaith Chaplaincy. Our potlucks are open to everyone, and are a great chance to meet us and find out about our group. Members often share prayers, food thanks and reflections from their various faiths. We also discuss what social justice means and how we can be more active.
- First Steps to Understanding: Two ISJ members spent the night on the streets of Victoria as a first step to understanding poverty and homelessness in our city. The action was part of a day of prayer against the welfare cuts, organized by the interfaith coalition Faith in Action.
- Sock Drop: In December 2003, we put a call out for knitters to help us make socks and scarves for people living on the streets of Victoria during the cold winter season. We collected boxloads of clothing donations
- Street Outreach: We visited Victoria's needle exchange, for Street Outreach Services, and learned about issues of drug use, homelessness and harm reduction. SOS trained us in safely collecting drug accessories from the streets, called "rig digging," and we aim to continue this as a service project
- Food Security: We plan to support local food activists Food Not Bombs with cooking and serving help. FNB serves free vegetarian food every Saturday downtown, and builds community around peace and social justice.
