Jesus helps an untouchable woman at the well, defying social stigma (John 4:7-10)
"I do not think abortion is a good thing - who
does? I still support a woman's right to choose, until society ensures that all mothers and
children are respected, supported and safe" -Hailey, pro-choice Catholic, 25
"Many people think they would never get an abortion... until they need one. That's what happened to me. My child and I would now be trapped in a desperate situation
if I hadn't had access" -"Jane", pro-choice Evangelical/Anglican, 32
Welcome to the Victoria Student Christian Movement's choice and abortion page.
Since coming out in favour of women's reproductive options at the University of Victoria, we have received a whole range
of responses.
While some Christians are confused about our stand on this controversial and divisive issue, others have told us they
identify very strongly with our message.
Apparently, "pro-life" doesn't represent all Christians and people of faith.
We want to get the message out that supporting choice is not necessarily "pro-abortion." Rather, we see abortion as a personal moral choice decided by the woman.
At our student society's meeting on February 10, the UVic pro-life group Youth Protecting Youth will attempt to remove
our student society's support for women's options in regard to abortions, citing freedom of speech and religious
conscience.
The SCM is in coalition with Students Protecting Choice in defending our student society's pro-choice policy. The policy doesn't force abortions
on any student, but instead maintains that women should have a right to choose.
However, at SCM we also recognize that abortion is a complex ethical issue upon which we do not all agree.
Please read our reasons, reflect prayerfully on this issue, and consider endorsing our campaign below.
This campaign reflects the opinions of the Victoria local unit, not the larger Student
Christian Movement or its national policies.
"My faith teaches me to be compassionate. Let's address the roots of unwanted pregnancy, and not punish women." -Glenys,
pro-choice United Church student, 24
"I'm pro-choice and pro-faith. Abortion should be one
option among many, and I want my student society to support that choice. -David, pro-choice
Christian, 23
Please give us your feedback, and consider adding your endorsement of our pro-choice
campaign, to get the message out: pro-life Christians do not speak for all of us
