first nations rally
Thursday, March 3 :: NOON
@ Legislature Buildings (government @ belleville)
-
Local elders will knock on the door of the legislature, in full
regalia, to protest both the forceful removal of elders from the land
titles office earlier last week, and the decision the government to
transfer all relevant documents regarding local land claims to north
vancouver, deeply effecting local first nations ability to negotiate land claims.
The Songhees have asked for public support.

killer coke meeting
TUESDAY, Jan 18 :: 7 pm
Emma's (1124 Pembroke)
Students and activists met at Emma's house to
discuss action for the Killer Coke Campaign. The campaign is
drawing attention to the deaths of union members of a Coca-Cola
factory in Guatemala. Stickers have been made to get the word
out but a petition may be in place to remove coke machines from
public places around victoria.

SCM in the news Stop the
U.S. Attack on Iraq!
As the U.S. continues to attack
the Iraqi city of Falluja, people in Victoria and around the world are
speaking out for peace and justice--not war.
SCM marched with Students Against War and other groups on Nov 13 to call
for an end to the siege of Fallujah and the U.S.
occupation.

school of the americas! nov 19-22 fort benning,
georgia, usa SCM Victoria sent Emma, one of our members,
far south from Nov 18-23 on a pilgrimage to the School of the Americas
(SOA), a notorious U.S. army school which has trained torturers,
assassins and dictators throughout Latin America. She joined 16,000
people at the gates in protest. On the way, she connected with
resistance communities in Toronto, Detroit, Atlanta and Fort
Benning.
Since returning, Emma has shared her stories with a number of groups in Victoria.
Read our SOA page for more info.

The "liberation" of Iraq? Nov 8
Stewart Vriesinga, of Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT), recently returned
from Iraq and talked about his experiences there. He exposed the
cruelties of the American occupation and strategies for resistance to
occupation.
This was a great chance to learn about CPT, a radical alternative to
violence.

sacred ecology retreat
nov 10-12 We explored ecologically
sensitive spirituality for these times, and the emerging "cosmological
ethic" with Sr. Maureen Wild (SC) of the Centre for
Earth and Spirit. We developed tools for the Great Turning, the
transition from a suicidal Industrial Growth System to a Life Sustaining
Society.

Make cookies, not War!
Nov 15-16
To fundraise for Emma's trip to the SOA, we baked up a
storm, and the cookies, cakes and sushi came flooding in. In two days,
our bakesale earned $200, and we raised another $350 in
donation.
Many, many thanks to everyone who helped make Emma's trip possible (and
watch for her stories on Dec 2!)
