JUSTICE

let justice roll!

Racism is a sin!

The SCM is committed to educating ourselves and others about racism. Racism is still systemic and pervasive in our society, but too often white people are unable to see it because of privilege.

With March 21 - UN international day to end racism - as our springboard, we invite you to join us on this journey.

We are guided in this work by our national Anti-Oppression Covenant.

Tenets of Anti-Racism

by Denise Nadeau

  • Confonting oppression will benefit everyone
  • We are all interrelated, with an underlying commonality rooted in the sacredness of the cosmos
  • All forms of oppression are interconnected. It is not useful to argue about a hierachy of oppressions
  • Fixing blame helps no one. Taking responsibilitiy helps everyone
  • Expect to learn from your mistakes
  • Accept the fact of conflict

UPCOMING:
building antiracist cultures II

Thursday, April 14 :: 6-9 pm
@ Hailey's (1537-#3 Gladstone, near Belmont St)

    David will be continuing our interactive and engaging workshop on racial justice & privilege at our potluck - but newcomers are encouraged to join us on this journey. We begin by honouring our own stories and cultures, and striving to build antiracist culture from a place of support and strength.

no one is illegal!

Rally: Sat, March 5 :: noon
@ Immigration Offices (816 government st)

This rally is to raise awareness that Canada detains so-called "terrorism" suspects without trial, charges or evidence, using post-911 "security certificates". Here is the SCM's position:
The Student Christian Movement see the detention of humans through security certificates as a violation of dignity, fairness and human rights. Racial profiling and the war on 'terror' are unconsitutional. They are also unjust and immoral. We call for the right to a fair trial and an end to all forms of racism

first nations rally

Thursday, March 3 :: NOON
@ Legislature Buildings (government @ belleville)

Local elders will knock on the door of the legislature, in full regalia, to protest both the forceful removal of elders from the land titles office earlier last week, and the decision the government to transfer all relevant documents regarding local land claims to north vancouver, deeply effecting local first nations ability to negotiate land claims.

The Songhees have asked for public support.
